A series of in-person dancing sessions have been launched by Multicultural Cumbria.
Dance Carousel is a project which brings people together in person to learn dances from around the world.
The project provides a female-only environment to encourage women from black, Asian and ethnic minority groups and of all backgrounds to get involved.
Over lockdown the session had continued online. Now, in connection with arts project Artful Ways, the team is going to run in-person Dance Carousel sessions in the grounds of University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle.
Artful Ways has been funded by the Arts Council to bring people together across Cumbria to celebrate their creativity and connection as the county emerges from lockdown.
The project will showcase some of Cumbria’s creativity in Cumbria, led by Harriet and Rob Fraser of environmental arts practice somewhere nowhere.
Artful Ways is inviting people from all across the cultural sector to meet up outside, to walk between studios, venues and other cultural landmarks, and to make a piece of creative work in response.
Their tracks, recorded with an easy-to-use app, will be added to a new map celebrating Cumbria’s creative richness.
Pieces of creative work made by participants – from professional artists and budding creatives – will be shared on the website and a selection will be chosen to feature in a touring exhibition. More information can be found on the website, www.artful-ways-cumbria.com.
Multicultural Cumbria has partnered with somewhere nowhere to develop a creative walk and help people get involved with the project.
Multicultural Cumbria has planned three Dance Carousel sessions for Artful Ways which are open to all women to take part in.
They are free, thanks to funding from Active Cumbria Tackling Inequalities Fund and Arts Council England.
The walks are on Sunday July 4, 11 and 18, from noon to 2pm.
On July 4, the session will start with a short walk from the Chinese Garden in Rickerby Park, up to Multicultural Cumbria’s new office in the grounds of University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus.
In the grounds of the University of Cumbria, there will be an outdoor dance session led by dance tutors who will share their authentic dance styles from around the world, including, African, Salsa, Bollywood and Indian classical.
Everyone will be encouraged to play with ideas and collaborate to create a unique piece of choreography inspired by the walk.
If you have any mobility difficulties or other concerns about joining this walk please get in touch as we have arrangements so that you can join the dance session without the walk ~ and the dance will be adapted to suit all abilities.
On July 11 and 18 there will be no walk, just the dance session in the grounds of the University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus.
There will also be the chance to be part of a film of the event which will be submitted to the Artful Ways touring exhibition.
