Two people have died following a collision on the A66 near Cockermouth.

The collision, involving a black Ford S Max and a tractor, happened in the early hours of Saturday on the A66 between the Fitz roundabout and the Oakhurst roundabout.

Shaun Milburn, 34, of Maryport, who was driving the S Max and Michelle Pattinson 42, of Maryport, a passenger in the car, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services were called at around 5.50am and the Great North Air Ambulance also attended the scene.

The Ford was carrying five people at the time of the collision.

The three other passengers, a man and a woman in their 30s and a man in his 40s, all local, were taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The tractor driver, a local 20-year-old man, was treated at the Cumberland Infirmary for minor injuries.
