Silloth RNLI’s volunteer crew and Maryport Inshore Rescue were called out yesterday after people were concerned for the safety of a swimmer in the sea.
The man was spotted off the coast of Silloth and the RNLI made contact with him, while he was in the water.
He explained he had swum from Scotland and intended to swim back to Caerlaverock Castle, Scotland.
A spokesman for Silloth RNLI said: “The tide in the Solway Firth is particularly strong and unpredictable and Silloth RNLI lifeboat crew were concerned for the swimmer’s safety and consequently decided to escort him back as far as possible. The swimmer was safe and well.”
