The final game of the Cumberland County League’s latest crop of midweek fixtures was played out on the grass pitch at the County Ground, Whitehaven.
It was a West Cumbrian reserve team derby in Division One between Whitehaven Amateurs and Windscale with the visitors coming out on top 3-0.
In ideal conditions, play in the first half was fairly even with both teams creating opportunities but neither was able to give the respective goalkeepers anything major to worry about.
The game turned dramatically in the 12th minute of the second period when Amateurs were awarded a penalty for an unnecessary foul in the area.
However they failed to take advantage of the opportunity when Jamie Thursby blasted his spot kick over the bar.
This was certainly a turning point for three minutes later Windscale had taken a 2-0 lead with goals from Marc Callan and Ryan Byrne.
Play became really open as Amateurs tried to salvage something from the game.
However, Kieran Fraser put the game beyond doubt with Windscale’s third goal with 10 minutes left on the clock.
