A popular light festival has been cancelled due to a “perfect storm of weather forecasts and fuel shortages”.

The Lakeland Festival of Light was due to take place this Saturday in Keswick.

The event was set to be held in aid of the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs Association.

A spokesman for the search dogs charity said: “Unfortunately due to a perfect storm of weather forecasts and fuel shortages, the festival of light has been cancelled. Thank you to everyone who was supporting this event. Also, a huge thank you to Matt and the team at the Lakeland Mountain Guides.”

Matt Le Voi, event founder, posted on Facebook: “It is with deep regret that I have made the decision to cancel LFOL 2021. The weather is not improving. I have been in the Lake District long enough to know that even two days out a lot can change, but the forecast for Saturday has been steadily worsening.

“As it stands, we can pull the plug on the event with little financial impact to us or our festival partners, regroup and come back again in 2022 ready to rumble. As per my previous post, safety is absolutely paramount, and as much as I’d love to get everyone up on that ridge, the second someone is hurt it wouldn’t be worth it. Here at LMG, we make sure our events are first class and our reputation and reviews displays that.

“So, for now, I would like to thank everyone who was gearing up to support LFOL 2021, whether that was to marshal, to take pictures, to come and sell cakes, or to go up Catbells. Big thanks to all those that donated a raffle prize, they will go into the 2022 pot! I cannot release a 2022 date right this second as I need to get a couple of boxes ticked, but in the meantime please make sure you’re following us at Lakeland Mountain Guides to make sure you catch any updates. Happy Hiking.”
