The M6 is likely to remain closed until the early hours of tomorrow following a lorry fire this morning.

The blaze happened at around 7.35am and it resulted in the northbound carriageway being shut.

Police, the fire and ambulance services were called to the incident at around 7.35am.

The police confirmed there were no injuries to anyone involved.

A diversion was put in place from Junction 36 via the A6. Police are telling motorists to expect long delays.

The latest update from Highways is that the closure will remain for the rest of the evening.

It added that the diversion route is very slow moving.

Traffic is being diverted via the hollow diamond diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M6 northbound at J36 and take the A590 westbound to the Brettargh Holt junction
  • Follow the A591 to Plumgarths Roundabout, and then take the third exit onto the A5284 towards Kendal
  • Follow the A5284 Windermere Road/Stricklandgate, turning left with all traffic onto A6 Sandes Avenue
  • Follow the A6 northbound out of Kendal towards Shap Toll Bar junction
  • At the junction, turn right onto the B6261 and then turn left and re-join the M6 northbound at J39 (Shap)
