A confident Workington Conservative Club outfit maintained their winning start to the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League season.
They defeated fellow townies and Division One opponents, Station Road A, by 4-1.
However, the match started with Station A on the front foot as Tom Thompson defeated top-quality opposition in the form of former county champion Richard McCarthy to put his side 1-0 up.
At that point, it all went downhill for the visitors with Julian Plaza, Alan Moore, Ryan Barker and Dave Holland all winning with room to spare for the home team to maintain their excellent start to the 2021/22 campaign.
However, Workington’s Station Road B moved to the top of Division One with a 5-0 whitewash of Division Two’s United Club.
Even though the scoreline suggested one-way traffic a couple of relatively close frames ultimately proved to be United’s undoing with the home side taking full advantage.
Victories for Shaun Ayre, Kevin Kirkham, Simon Frazer, Peter O’Hagan and captain Stephen O’Hagan delivered all five points for the Station B side as the United Club slumped to their first defeat of the season.
Division One’s Veterans Club A made the short journey up the coast to face Division Two’s Maryport Social A and with a solid performance returned home with a 4-1 victory.
To start the match a grinding win for Mark Tatton, followed by an excellent comeback by Paul Mostyn, put the Vets A in a great position at 2-0 up.
The away side then looked to be going 3-0 up but with a late flourish from Ben Scott the Social cueist pulled one back for 2-1.
A victory in the next put the Vets A 3-1 up and as captain Kevin Basnett limited his opponent to just three points in the last the Vets A side made it three league wins out of three to sit second in the table.
Division Two’s Veterans Club B could not push their home advantage though as they went down 4-1 to Division One’s Workington Golf Club.
A victory for Ryan Ismay put the golfers 1-0 up but as Shane Evitts returned the favour the match score stood at 1-1.
The third frame was to prove key in the momentum stakes with the Golf Club’s Mark Cowen producing the performance of the match to put his side 2-1 up.
A narrow win for Phil Sorfleet made it 3-1, and as Mark Brasted won the last with ease the Golf Club travelled home feeling much the happier of the two sides.
Division Two’s the Rack Shack were awarded a walk-over due to their opponents Workington Legion unfortunately having to pull out of the league. All previous matches against Workington Legion have now been made null and void.
