Firefighters in Cumbria have said they “cannot state in strong enough terms how dangerous” a blaze could have been.
Longtown and Carlisle West fire stations attended a fire inside the old church on Burn Street in Longtown last night and found smoke piling out of the place of worship.
The fire was located in the main hall and extinguished. A fan was used to clear out the smoke and make the building safe.
A statement from Longtown Fire Station said: “We cannot state in strong enough terms how dangerous this might have been, both to whoever had been in the building and to the town’s firefighters who had to deal with the incident.
“On this occasion, everything was safely extinguished, but fire is a killer.”
