A new book celebrating Christmas in Lakeland has been released.
Author Alan Cleaver, of Whitehaven, has joined forces with Keswick publishing house Inspired by Lakeland, to publish A Lake District Christmas – a beautiful new hardback gift book packed with tales and traditions of Cumbrian Yuletides past.
A nostalgic celebration of Christmas in the historic counties of Westmorland and Cumberland, A Lake District Christmas is a miscellany of seasonal writings, memories, poems,
recipes and songs.
In the company of authors from William Wordsworth to Hardwicke Rawnsley, Robert Anderson to Sara Hutchinson, join the carol singers of Wasdale, celebrate a Thirlmere ‘merry neet’,
visit the Windermere frost fair and take a seat at the Keswick ‘old folks’ do’.
Accompany the postman on his winter round, pity inmates of the Carlisle workhouse, share the terrors of Victorian ghost-hunters, browse letters from the Christmas 1914 truce… and discover 40 dialect words for ‘snew’.
Alan said: “This is an unashamed wallow in Christmas nostalgia. Any reader of A Lake District Christmas who doesn’t finish this book with a warm glow in their hearts and an urge to add another decoration to the Christmas tree deserves all the humbugs coming their way!”
