Former Carlisle United striker Charlie Wyke is in hospital after collapsing during training with his current club Wigan Athletic.
It happened earlier in the week and 28-year-old Wyke missed Tuesday’s drawn League One game at Cambridge United when the club said he was ill.
But today Wigan confirmed that Wyke is being closely monitored in hospital and is in a stable condition.
Club medics had initially treated the player at the training ground before he was taken to hospital.
It’s the latest worrying incident involving footballers who have collapsed or complained of chest pains and discomfort.
Another former Carlisle forward Ryan Bowman is back playing after his heart rate soared while he was playing for Shrewsbury last month.
Bowman came off with heart palpitations half an hour into the visitors’ 2-1 defeat at Ipswich, where medical staff and doctors had to shock his heart back into a beat and he was rushed to hospital.
The striker, 29, was released later that evening and has undergone further testing and met with a cardiology specialist before returning to training and subsequently to playing.
At the top level Sergio Aguero suffered chest pains during a game for Barcelona and subsequent tests revealed a heart rhythm problem which may end his career.
In the Euros during the summer Denmark’s Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.
Wyke is the latest player to be affected and at Wigan he has scored five league goals in 15 appearances this season.
He was with Carlisle United from 2015/17 and in 77 games scored 32 goals before being sold to Bradford City for an undisclosed fee.
A further 22 goals for the Valley Parade side in 56 games brought him to the attention of Sunderland and he joined them in August 2018 for around £400,000.
After being named Sunderland Player of the Year in May 2021 he joined Wigan on a three-year deal two months later. He had scored 34 goals in 94 games for the Mackems.
