Wigton Motor Club has been named among the best in the country by a leading national organisation.
The club came second in Motorsport UK’s Club of the Year award.
The club said it had continued to be active whenever possible during the pandemic and pressed ahead with the building of its headquarters, the Motor House, near Cockermouth.
In the second half of the year it ran the annual Cumbria Classic & Motor Sport Show at Dalemain Mansion, near Penrith, which attracted over 800 cars and a record number of spectators.
The Solway Historic Rally took place in October and there were also regular autotests and autosolos and the new monthly Cars and Coffee meets at the Motor House were well attended.
Despite the pandemic, the club has continued to publish its award-winning magazine Start Line each month and also managed to attract 80 new members taking the total figure for the year to 800.
A spokesman said: “The club has ambitious plans for the future despite the ongoing restrictions do the pandemic with new events and social activities as restrictions are lifted.
“We have managed to continue to support our nominated charities, Blood Bikes and Hospice at Home.
“Wigton Motor Club have a wonderful record in the Motor Club of the Year competition having won twice before, being placed second twice and had several commendations.
“We are delighted with the award and the £500 cheque and it is all down to the work of our volunteers.”
Hugh Chambers, Motorsport UK CEO, said: “There is no doubt that without our clubs, volunteers and competitors coming together, the sport would simply not be able to operate, particularly as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to throw up new challenges at all levels and disciplines of competition.
“My thanks to all who continue to keep the sport moving forward in these times, and congratulations once again to the winners.”
