Workington Academy’s trip to the Etihad last night proved a huge success.
The Reds junior set-up took six teams to play at one of the finest facilities in the Premier League – and impressed.
Brian Dawson, Head of the Academy said: “The teams conducted themselves really well and were competitive in all age groups.
“The bonus for us was that City’s coaches were equally impressed and have invited us back in September and want it to become an annual visit.
“The set-up was unbelievable with 16 and a half pitches. The half-pitch was a special area for goalkeepers!
“It really was a great night for the players, our coaches and the parents who travelled.”
Among those watching was West Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford, who is on loan with Bolton Wanderers from Man City.
Dawson said: “He knows one or two of our coaches and came along to watch which was nice of him.
“All the teams were competitive but I think the best effort came from our under-16s who only lost 2-0.
“City’s second goal came in the very last minute when we were chasing an equaliser.
“The City coaches were impressed, not just with how we competed but in the way we were trying to play football.
“So it proved to be a really worthwhile exercise and the players are already looking forward to going back in September.”
