Barrow Raiders made it three wins from as many games in the Betfred Championship when they beat Newcastle Thunder 14-6.
It was heavy going and there were few opportunities for free-flowing, open rugby as the bulk of the work was from the forwards.
Barrow had already beaten Thunder in a pre-season game which had produced 56 points but there was little chance of that being repeated.
Finding the dry patches enabled both teams to use their wingers but only rarely. However on 20 minutes the Raiders found some down the left wing and when the Ball was moved inside Bradd Crellin finished-off with the touchdown which Ryan Shaw converted.
That was the only score of the first half but Barrow were able to double their lead on 58 minutes when last season’s record try scorer made a neat interception and raced 30 yards for the score. Shaw added the conversion.
When they were awarded a penalty on 73 minutes Shaw took the opportunity to go for goal and extend the Barrow lead to 14 points.
There were only four minutes left when Thunder got their consolation with a try in the corner after following-up a kick ahead, converted by Craig Mullen.
