Work has begun on a £281,000 project to improve a Carlisle park.
The cash for Hammonds Pond has come from a housing developer building an estate nearby and contractors are due to start work to improve footpaths and resurface the BMX track.

Contractors, working on Carlisle City Council’s behalf, will be on site for several months, however efforts will be made to minimise disruption to park users by working in sections, which will be closed to public access for the shortest time possible.
Work has started on the BMX track and contractors will work on the new pedestrian entrance path off Blackwell Road (next to the existing shared vehicle/pedestrian entrance) on from Wednesday.
This work will involve closing the car park to vehicles during working hours on weekdays for about two weeks. Access to vehicles will be restored outside of working hours and on weekends.
The overall work includes resurfacing the BMX track and park footpaths, plus replacing street furniture as required, by Toman Contracting Ltd.
Eroded and damaged areas of the pond edge will be repaired and reinstated by Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd; and end of life timber foot bridges will be replaced with new steel versions by Evans Agricultural Contractors Ltd.
The kick wall and basketball hoop near the Blackwell Road car park is set to be replaced with new outdoor exercise equipment, supplied and installed by Kompan Scotland Ltd.
Carlisle City Council, with the support of the Friends of Hammonds Pond and Hammonds Pond Café, consulted on the proposed works last year.
