Workington Reds fans are planning to raise £1,000 for popular forward Charlie Bowman who has suffered a serious injury at work.
Bowman who was hit by a falling 60ft tree last week and suffered back and head injuries is currently in Leeds Infirmary.
A badly damaged vertebra was operated on yesterday and his mother posted last night that the surgeon reported it had been a success.
She said on Twitter: “The surgeon has just phoned and it’s all gone very successfully. He is moving his limbs and everything.”
The Reds Independent Supporters Club had earlier started a Just Giving page with a target of £1,000 to help Charlie in his recovery.
Although Bowman had not been a regular starter this season, and has suffered injury setbacks, he is a very popular member of the squad and last month turned down the chance to join Kendal on loan to stay with the Reds and fight for his place.
Manager Chris Willcock said: “Charlie is liked by everyone connected to the club and we are all rooting for him to pull through. We had just been saying how well he had been going in training and we felt he would play a part in our end-of-season push for the title.”
