A taxi passenger has admitted a cannabis supply crime after £15,000-worth of the drug was found in a cab near Penrith.

Police stopped the taxi on the town outskirts on the afternoon of November 4. It had been travelling on the M6, Carlisle Crown Court heard today.

Around 1.5kg of cannabis, potentially worth in the region of £15,000 was recovered, along with more than £3,300 cash.

In court today, 22-year-old Albanian national Islam Mema pleaded guilty to two offences.

He admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply, and also the possession of criminal property — cash. His barrister said the guilty pleas were entered on a formal basis which would be entered on to the digital case file in due course.

The judge, Recorder Julian Shaw, adjourned the case and requested the preparation of a probation service pre-sentence report.

Mema, who has been remanded in custody since November, is due to be sentenced at the crown court on April 1.

In the meantime, he will remain in prison.
