L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division One leaders Workington Conservative Club are looking stronger as each week passes.
Now with just two games left they look like hefty favourites to take the title as they lead by 4 points over Station Road B.
That’s on the back of their latest 3-2 win against Division Two’s United Club, although it went to the final frame.
The Cons side have won every match they have played this season and as Julian Plaza opened up with a win that saw his opponent score only one point the leaders signalled their strength in depth.
Frame two, however, delivered a victory for the underdog as United’s Mark Suitor tied the match at 1-1.
A Ryan Barker win in the next put Cons in the lead once again but back came the United Club with a victory from Division Two leading player Clive Lister, that included a break of 37.
The decider had the United Club as likely winners on paper but in showing his, and his teams’ resilience, Dave Holland demonstrated this superbly to close out his frame for a 3-2 match victory.
Cons sit on a Division One total of 53 points with the United Club still top of Division Two, and almost guaranteed to claim the title, on 39 points.
Workington’s Station Road B now face a mammoth task if the Division One title holders have aspirations of retaining their pre-COVID 2019 trophy as they went down 3-2 to a travelling Workington Golf Club side.
A 2-0 lead for Station B thanks to victories from Kevin Kirkham (30 break) and Peter O’Hagan gave the impression that an easy match win was on the cards.
However, the golf club bounced back in one of the turnarounds of the season with victories from Phil Sorfleet, Mark Brasted and Stephen Jackson to upset the title holders in tremendous fashion.
Station Road B remain second in Division One on 49 points with the Golf Club third in the same division on 39 points.
A club derby game between the two Veterans Club teams saw the Division Two outfit preside over their Division Onew counterparts as the B team beat the A team 3-2.
A brilliantly constructed break of 30 from Vets A’s Paul Smith was more than enough to win the first and as team mate, captain and leading Division One player Kevin Basnett won the next, the score was 2-0.
This didn’t faze the Division Two side and with probably one of the shots of the season on the final black Sal Cakmak made it 2-1.
With confidence now on the B teams’ side Shane Evitts delivered a nearly flawless performance in the next to force a decider.
Managing to compose proceedings the A team looked to be the ones coming out on top.
However with a cool finish it was B side captain Geoff Banton who delivered the match winning blow in an excellent team performance.
Vets A stay fourth in Division One on 37 points and Vets B look certain to capture second in Division Two on 30 points.
Finally, Maryport Social recorded a morale boosting victory as they won 3-2 away to Whitehaven’s Rack Shack in the all-Division Two fixture.
A victory, and a 1-0 lead, for the Rack Shack’s Nev Stitt was short-lived as Andrew Sharp levelled the match score.
Wayne Sinclair put the Whitehaven side in front again at 2-1 but Maryport rallied with a victory from Gary Miller for 2-2.
The final frame saw a relatively low scoring encounter ebb and flow but in grabbing the initiative it was Andrew Scott who claimed the frame and match win for Maryport in an intriguing contest.
Maryport Social’s victory sees them level on a Division Two points total of 21with their opponents.
However with the Rack Shack having played a game less the Whitehaven side look the more likely of the two teams to make the play-offs.
