Workington Reds’ centenary dinner is a sell-out.

A number of the club’s stars from yesteryear will be attending the event at the Washington Central Hotel today, Friday, when a specially produced film of the Reds’ 100 years will be shown for the first time.

The top table guests are Dave Butler, John Ogilvie, Mike Rogan, Peter Foley, John Reach and Kyle May.

Lifelong fan Steve Durham, chairman of the Centenary Committee, said: “The event has been a while in the planning and is a way of celebrating 100 years of football at Workington Reds.

“We are delighted that so many ex-players will be in attendance and we are all looking forward to a brilliant night of memories.”

Butler, a former Reds skipper, scored the club’s 1,000th goal in the Football League ands went on to play at Watford. He became a physio and worked with Terry Venables at QPR, Tottenham and England.

Ogilvie, who made over 400 League and Cup games for the Reds, was a member of the side which scored the most famous win in their history, a 4-1 League Cup replay success at Blackburn Rovers in 1964.

Rogan was one of many long-serving goalkeepers Reds had during their Football League career and he played over 400 games for the club, including their last season in Division Four.

Foley, a Scot who like many from north of the border, married and settled in the area. He played almost 100 times in the Third Division and also returned to play non-League for the club while also having a spell as caretaker manager.

Reach, the first captain to lift silverware when Reds dropped into non-League football in 1977, he spent seven seasons at Borough Park. He led the team to President’s Cup glory in 1984.

May is the club’s all-time record-appearance holder with more than 540 games in 13 seasons at the club, and a modern Workington legend.

Reds current manager Chris Willcock and members of his squad will also be attending ahead of their latest NPL West test against Trafford the following day.

Club chairman Dave Bowden said: “The next 100 years starts on Saturday and we are looking to crown our celebrations this time by clinching the NPL West title and promotion.”
