Chapel Bank Inter-departmental Fab Shop

It hasn’t taken long to identify the people on the squad picture we posted yesterday.

The only problem was the team involved from the Fab Shop were cricketers and not footballers.

Indeed we actually said that at least three of them were useful cricketers!

One of them, John Burns, a great servant over the years to Workington Cricket Club has identified everyone on the picture.

John contacted Cumbria Crack to say: “The year was 1969 as far as I can find out. We returned in 1969 with a stronger side and became the first team from Cumbria to win.

“On the 1969 visit, we had to play a preliminary round which we won. In the semi, we batted first. In the event of rain the score at 10 overs won. We used our better bowlers to keep the score down and would have won but it didn’t rain and we lost.

“We did go with a football team (captained by Maurice McCracken) which included a lot of the cricketers but were totally outplayed in the first match.“

On the picture are: Back row. Albert Burns, Dick Hardy (fab shop manager), Bill Denwood, Ron Shillito, Denis Fraser, Joe Bell, John Burns, Ernie Talbot, Jimmy Armstrong.

Middle row. Paddy Williamson, John Stagg, Frank Goodall, John Hodgson.

Front row. Richard Tubman, Stan Crelling, Danny James, Charlie Bigrigg, Alan Hogarth.
