Dave Bowden is to step down as chairman and director of Workington Reds.
A board statement tonight said that his involvement in the Sporting Village project was proving especially demanding.
The plans for the new stadium, to be shared by Reds and Workington Town and be central to a community programme within Allerdale, are reaching a crucial stage.
The statement said that it was becoming increasingly obvious to everyone that the responsibility of both chairing the club and progressing the stadium project are impossible.
Bowden, who has served both clubs as director and chairman said: “I need to give a dedicated focus to the project but will still be supporting the Board as we all continue to drive the club forward.
A spokesman for the board said: “David has played a major part in moving the club forward as both director and chairman over the past two years.
“However we agree realigning his responsibilities to focus on the Sporting Village project is in the best long-term interests of the club.
“We thank David for his dedication and hard work and hope to maintain the great progress made under his leadership.”
The Reds board will be meeting soon to discuss who replaces Bowden as chairman. Phil Norman is currently vice-chairman.
