Windscale’s run of good form continued with a 3-0 home victory in the Wearside League against Shotton Colliery.
It meant they had collected 13 points from a possible 15 in their last five games.
Playing their last home fixture of the season, the Atoms enjoyed the majority of possession in the first period, with their major threat coming from front-runner Lewis Jolly.
He created a number of chances with good deliveries across the face of the Shotton goal, none of which were able to be converted. Jolly himself had several shooting opportunities which were either wide of the target or collected by the Shotton keeper.
The visitors created a number of chances themselves with breakaways from their own half or using the long ball to turn the Windscale defensive line.
They did work the Atoms keeper Andrew Richardson a number of times, particularly from dead ball situations. However, these were dealt with reasonably comfortably.
The efforts from both sides produced nothing of note with the game a 0-0 stalemate at the half-time interval.
It was left back Ross Leeson who broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the second period. Lewis Jolly gathered a high ball wide on the right, evaded a Shotton defender and delivered a low cross which Leeson controlled, turned and placed his shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
It was Jolly himself who notched the second for the home side, albeit in controversial circumstances.
A defence splitting pass from Reece Fretwell found Jolly on the edge of the box. He dragged the ball back beyond a defender before delivering a left foot shot which struck the underside of the bar.
It dropped down behind the goal line and bounced back into play but in a flashback to the Russian linesman at the 1966 World Cup final, the assistant referee’s flag confirmed the strike was legitimate.
The Atoms 3rd was converted by Darren Donald, probably playing his last home game for the Atoms Wearside team as he is taking charge of the club’s County League side next season.
Following a run down the right, Andrew Begbie played a square ball across the box which Donald directed into the net from 12 yards.
Windscale finish their Wearside season with two away games, Richmond next week-end followed by a visit to Wolviston the following Saturday, April 30.
