Petrol prices set a new record of 178.5p a litre on Tuesday morning, increasing by 0.6p in just 24 hours.
The price of diesel has also increased to 185.2p a litre and is the third time in six days that a new high has been hit.
And drivers are urged to brace themselves for fuel prices rocketing to £2 a litre as they grapple with the cost of living crisis.
Prices at the pumps have already reached new highs and the drivers organisers RAC is warning people that filling up their vehicle could hit almost £110 if costs continue to spiral.
Currently, the highest cost for petrol in Cumbria is 194.9p and diesel at 199.9p at Lakeland Service Station in Barrow.
The lowest cost for petrol in Cumbria is 169.7p and diesel at 179.7p, both at Workington’s Asda petrol station.
Simon Williams, an RAC spokesman said: ”The cost of filling a 55-litre family car with petrol has now topped £98 for the first time in history.
“The oil price is rising due to increased demand for fuel across the world. This means fuel costs more to buy.”
RAC Fuel Watch showed an average increase of 22.11p for petrol since last year and 27.92p for diesel.
The RAC has called on the Government to help drivers. Mr Williams said: “We strongly urge the Government to take drastic action to help soften the impact for drivers from these never-before-seen pump prices.”
