Danny Grainger (Ben Challis)

Workington Reds will start the new NPL West season next month with a home game against Mossley.

A famous fixture in Reds’ history, it was the final game of the 1998/99 season when a 2-1 win at Borough Park gave Workington the North Western Trains League title.

They will go head-to-head on on Saturday, August 13. This time round it signals a return to the club for Danny Grainger whose two previous seasons in charge of Reds ended in both being voided.

The opening midweek fixture on Tuesday, August 16 will see Reds travelling to Merseyside to tackle Prescot Cables.

The second Saturday of the season is set aside for the FA Cup when Reds could be tackling a Cumbrian derby at Penrith in the preliminary round if Darren Edmondson’s side can beat West Allotment Celtic in the extra preliminary round on August 6.

Reds first home mid-week clash will be on Tuesday, August 23 when Trafford will be the visitors to Borough Park.

There has already been much interest in the promotion of Macclesfield to NPL West after they topped the NWCounties Premier Division and have been installed as favourites to win the League. Reds will play the away game first on Saturday, October 8.

The big clash at Borough Park will be on Saturday, February 25, which is expected to produce one of the biggest attendances of the season.

Reds will be at home on Boxing Day with Kidsgrove Athletic having to make the long trip from the Midlands while on Monday, January 2, Reds will be on the road to Clitheroe.

The season is due to end on Saturday, April 22 with a home game against Colne.
