A Carlisle-based painting and decorating contractor has won a prestigious industry award.

Story Decorating Group was named winner of the commercial category at the Painting and Decorating Association’s Premier Trophy Awards.

The contractor had two projects make the final, including its £1 billion transformation of Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 and an office block in Manchester.

The group was crowned winner of the category for its work at the airport, which according to the judges was executed to an excellent standard.

The work included the main concourse, security area, border control, car parks and access ramps.

Communications manager Claire Story said: “We were gobsmacked to be honest, we’re still in a bit of shock. To be judged and told by people in your industry that you have done an outstanding job is unreal.

“We’ve been entering since 2015 and we’ve always come away with a highly commended award, but this big win shows our guys are doing better all the time. It’s a testament to the quality of their work and to our values that when you look after staff, they do a good job, we’re really just over the moon and so proud of the team.”

Work on the 11 York Street office block in Manchester also received a highly commended award.
