Good returns from Flookburgh

Both West Cumbrian organisations raced from Flookburgh at the weekend and enjoyed good returns.

The West Cumberland Federation birds were liberated at 7.45am and reported excellent returns with some lofts locked-up after all their entries had returned within five minutes of each other.

WCF had not raced the previous Saturday but had flown two training exercises in midweek. They also raced this morning with an early liberation at 6.50am although it didn’t prove as good as the first one.

It does give the birds experience of two Flookburgh races, however, like the Derwent Valley Federation, and the two organisations will be at Garstang on Saturday although will be liberated separately.

There had been an agreement pre-season that the two organisations would race on their own and join up for Appleton on August 6 – but weather conditions might force a rethink on the programme.

The Derwent Valley Federation had their second race from Flookburgh on Saturday and returns were generally good.

There does, however, appear to be some cases of young bird sickness around the Derwent Valley and subsequently some leading lofts did not send to the race.

That is always the concern at this stage of the season and when in doubt fanciers are always advised to keep their birds out.
