Initial talks have been held over an amalgamation of the two West Cumbrian Sunday Leagues.
The Workington and District League and the Egremont and District League representatives met with Cumberland FA officials earlier this week.
Falling numbers of club in recent years and the need for a meaningful programme of fixtures has prompted the possible link up.
This week the Workington Sunday League has been reduced to just 12 teams following the resignation of the Highfield club from Cockermouth. The League is left with seven teams in the Premier Division and five in Division One.
The Egremont and District League will have one new club this coming season which takes them up to eight for 2022/23.
Cumberland FA chief executive Ben Snowdon set up the meeting when a number of things were discussed by representatives.
The biggest difference, of course, is that Egremont games kick off in the morning while the Workington League is an afternoon competition.
Nothing was agreed on the night but the Cumberland FA will be sending out a questionnaire for all individual clubs to express their views.
Once the clubs have responded to the questionnaire another meeting will be called to review the answers and to move forward on the amalgamation or not.
It is clear, however, that the decision has to come from the clubs and an amalgamation would not be enforced by the Cumberland FA without approval.
Nothing would be completed for this season, with the two Leagues operating as normal although the Workington League will be holding a committee meeting to discuss going forward with 12 teams, currently split 7 and 5.
The question of one League or revising to a 6 and 6 split will no doubt be on the agenda.
