Kells won the National Conference Division One title – without breaking sweat!
The West Cumbrians had finished their season last week with a win at Saddleworth to top the table on points differential.
It all came down to what Hull Dockers did in their final game at Wigan St Patrick’s – and they lost 26-22 to leave Kells as champions.
Coach Peter Smith said: “We didn’t have any club members down there but two Maryport lads watched the game and they were keeping us up-to-date with the score.
“We have done well this season to win it because both teams pushed each other all the way and in the end it was our better points differential which has won it for us.
“It’s great to be crowned chasmpions and we would like to dedicate that to one of our former player’s son who tragically died last week in a car crash in Perth, Australia.
“He was Dominic Burns, whose dad Gary used to play for us and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.”
