Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral will be held on Monday and has been declared a bank holiday.

The bank holiday will allow people, businesses and organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.

As an extra bank holiday, organisations across the county have been putting plans in place as they would for a scheduled bank holiday.

We will add in plans from different organisations as we get them.

Carlisle City Council

Bereavement services

All scheduled funerals and cremations will carry on as planned on the bank holiday.

Customer contact team

Carlisle City Council’s customer contact team will be available until 4pm on Friday September 16. People will be able to contact them again from 9am on Tuesday September 20. Services can still be accessed online here.

Refuse and recycling collections

Refuse and recycling collections will be a day later than usual following the bank holiday.

Usual refuse and recycling date and bank holiday collection date:

  • Monday September 19 (bank holiday) – Collecting Tuesday September 20
  • Tuesday September 20 – Collecting Wednesday September 21
  • Wednesday September 21 – Collecting Thursday September 22
  • Thursday September 22 – Collecting Friday September 23
  • Friday September 23 – Collecting Saturday September 24

Collections return to normal from Monday September 26 onwards.

For more information about council services, including emergency out of hours contact numbers, visit www.carlisle.gov.uk

Allerdale council

Allerdale Borough Council’s offices and phone lines will be closed on Monday and will reopen at 9am on Tuesday.

Waste collections

Waste collections will be carried out a day later than normal throughout the week beginning September 19.

Therefore, collections normally carried out on the Monday will be made on the Tuesday, with collections normally due on the Friday, will now be carried out on Saturday September 24. The council ask that residents have their bins out ready to be emptied by 6am on the day of collection.

Residents can check their bin collection day on the council’s website at www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/bincollections/

To contact the council in an emergency – such as for homelessness support – call 0303 123 1702.

Customers can also find out more about council services, pay bills and report any issues through the council’s website and MyAllerdale app.

South Lakeland District Council

The council’s offices in Kendal will be closed and bin/recycling rounds will be carried out a day later than usual all week.

For residents whose scheduled collection day is Friday September 23, council crews will be working on Saturday September 24.

A spokesman said: “They will do their very best to complete everyone’s rounds although there may be some disruption to the collection of green waste due to limited staff availability. The council apologises in advance for any inconvenience. Crews will return to catch up on the next scheduled calendar day in two weeks’ time.”

Barrow Council

Barrow Borough Council buildings will be closed, in line with bank holiday procedures, with the exception of cemeteries.

The council’s homelessness team will remain on standby to ensure urgent support is in place for anyone in need.

Garden waste collections will still go ahead for those who would normally receive one, as will a limited street cleansing service.

The Forum and The Dock Museum will be closed for the day, as will Barrow Leisure Centre, which is operated by Barrow Forward on behalf of Barrow Borough Council.

Lake District National Park Authority

Offices and visitor centres

All of the National Park’s offices and visitor centres will close to give staff the opportunity to pay their respects.

Car parks and toilets

Car parks and toilets in the Lake District will remain open.

All services will reopen on September 20.

Cumbria County Council
