Maryport racer Dan Bewley won the British Final at Belle Vue with a sublime performance.
The 23-year-old West Cumbrian won all five qualifying heats to go straight to the final where he raced well clear of the other three riders.
The ex-Comet was winning the title for the first time and Craig Cook, another former Workington rider, and a previous winner of the British Final also made the podium by finishing third in the final. Tom Brennan split the two Cumbrians in second place.
Bewley, who had a disappointing Grand Prix in Sweden on Saturday night, had ample consolation with this triumph.
He said: “It was awesome coming back to ride at Belle Vue having spent the season in Sweden and Poland.
“This season I have felt that I can go as fast as anybody but there’s more to it than that. I try to be a more complete rider and I think I showed the right consistency in winning the British final.”
Six former Comets riders took part in the prestigious event with a third, Kyle Howarth, making the semi-final where he finished third to miss out on the final.
Cook had scored 12 points in qualifying while Howarth made the semi-finals on ten. Richard Lawson had won his first two races but then had an engine failure and a last before ending with eight.
Charles Wright finished with a second behind Bewley and a win but missed out on seven points while Simon Lambert only managed two points.
Meanwhile Bewley had no time to reflect on a disappointing night in Mailla, Sweden when he scored only three [points from his five rides – three third places.
Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik moved nearer the Grand Prix title by winning the final from Freddie Lindgren and Maciej Janowski.
Bewley had started the night third in the Grand Prix standings but after this latest round slipped to fifth.
