Workington Town hope to be able to announce their new coach by the end of the week.
Chairman John Pleasants revealed that the club had not needed to advertise the post following the departure of Chris Thorman.
“It would be wrong to say inundated but we were pleasantly surprised at the number of people who expressed an interest in the job.
“A couple of them were a fit for how we want to take the club forward and have been occupying our attention.
“Things have moved on nicely and we should be in a position to name the new coach by the end of the week.”
Town had experienced a miserable return to the Championship, finishing bottom to face a quick drop back to League One.
The club’s financial difficulties were also highlighted towards the end of the season, caused by a cash flow problem rather than any serious debt.
Pleasants also revealed that largely due to to the efforts of volunteers and hard-core supporters the club is working its way towards financial stability.
“It does mean there won’t be a spend-spend approach to League One but we are looking at putting together a competitive squad to consolidate,” said the chairman.
Thorman, who had accepted a 50 per cent pay cut over the final weeks of the season, is expected to link up with Newcastle Thunder in his native North East.
