Contractors appointed for Carlisle’s new DPD parcel centre

How the DPD centre could look when built

A contractor has been appointed to build a new parcel distribution centre in Carlisle.

Caddick Construction has been named as the main contractor for the 62,286  sq m facility for DPD at Kingmoor Park.

Work will start in mid-November and is expected to last 10 months.

The move follows the announcement last month that Kingmoor Park Properties secured planning permission for the new facility at its K2 development. K2 is the new home for large occupiers looking for industrial and logistics space at the industrial park.

DPD currently occupies a 42,195 sq ft unit at Kingmoor Park but has signed a new lease on this larger, design and build facility to meet its need for more space.

The new distribution centre will accommodate 20 HGVs and 181 vans. It will be sustainably built, plus 10 of the car parking spaces will be allocated for car sharing, while electric vehicle charging points will be provided for some of the car and van parking spaces.

Neil McIntyre, of Kingmoor Park Properties, said: “We are delighted to see work start on site following DPD’s vote of confidence in K2 as a prime distribution location. Its motorway access and excellent connectivity makes it an ideal regional distribution hub; we have the land, and the workforce occupiers need, and a supportive local council which backs our plans to attract new businesses and create jobs. When fully developed, K2 will provide over a million sq ft of new industrial/logistics space, on a site with its own solar farm that can provide up to 70 per cent of occupiers’ energy needs. It’s very much what the future of logistics development in this country will look like.”

James Nicholson, of Harlex Property, the development manager for the scheme at K2, said: “The professional team has been working hard to bring this scheme to site and we are looking forward to working with Caddick Construction in the successful delivery of the scheme. Having DPD as the first tenant is a fantastic start to the delivery of the wider K2 site. In addition to the DPD building, we have recently lodged an outline planning application for the wider 82-acre site that is K2, which will accommodate up to 1,100,000 sq ft of new industrial and logistics buildings.”
