Workington Reds reached the third round of the Fred Conway County Cup with a hard-earned 2-1 win at Windscale.
With Danny Eccles in goal and Robbie Hebson making a long-awaited return, Workington’s side was completed by members of the Development side along with a trialis.
Reds made a sensational start with a goal on four minutes from the trialist who has been training with the squad for a few weeks.
Obua Mugalula let fly from just outside the area and it flew past the startled Windscale keeper Ian Studholme.
Workington kept up the pressure and after 15 minutes they scored again when Josh Palmer was put through and cleverly lifted then ball over Studholme.
Windscale came more into the game and Matty Sempill got on the end of a cross but directed his header over the bar.
It was a good little spell for the Atoms for soon afterwards Danny Eccles had to make his second real save of the night and it was a terrific one to deny Lewis Jolly.
Reds still held the 2-0 lead at half-time but Windscale got their lifeline 20 minutes into the second-half. A hand-ball in the Reds box meant a penalty for the hosts and Ben Graham tucked it away to give them a chance.
But they were unable to find another goal which would have taken the tie straight to a penalty shoot-out.
