Workington Reds Ladies missed opportunity against Morecambe

Workington Reds Ladies couldn’t replicate the spark that had served them so well seven days earlier as they drew 0-0 against Morecambe at Derwent Park.

The game had started off with an early morning pitch inspection on account of the amount of rain that had fallen over the previous week.

It was credit to the pitch management at Derwent Park that the game got the green light, as did the Under-14s West Cumbria Youth League fixture curtain raiser in which Cockermouth beat Allerdale.

The Reds were looking to build on their impressive away win at Accrington the previous week and Chorley the week prior, but instead could only secure a point along with a feeling of a missed opportunity.

The game was a largely even affair over the 90 minutes with neither team really staking a big enough claim to win the encounter. Early exchanges saw through balls played by Linzi Donaldson, which threatened to unlock the visitors defences but sadly the Reds were unable to capitalise.

Morecambe created their own periods of pressure too, especially as the first half was drawing to an end. A keen defensive performance from the Reds back line throughout the game managed to contain the visitors as periods of attacking possession were snubbed out effectively.

In the final few minutes of the game, Morecambe keeper Erin Lightfoot was called in to action when a superb strike from Emi Rudd from 18 yards out looked destined for the top right corner.

Lightfoot’s alert keeping resulted in a really good save being made and as such ensuring Morecambe would travel home with a point.

After the game, Peter Kemp from Match Day sponsors Crown Bevcan, selected club captain Naomi Foster for their Player of the Game with Emi Rudd receiving the same accolade from Morecambe.

The Ladies are in the road for their next two outings as they travel to Haslingden before completing their league schedule against Morecambe, the following weekend. The next home game is on December 18 against county rivals Carlisle United Ladies FC.

Reds squad

Laura Miller, Eleanor McDonald, Naomi Foster, Alice Kemp, Natalie Hooper, Linzi Donaldson, Ellie Ritchie, Sophie Birkett, Hannah Geen, Emi Rudd, Morgan McGrady, Kacey Rodgers, Zara Sandelands, Sydney Bragg, Leah Cottier.
