A new artisan bakery serving Romanian and English bakes has arrived in Whitehaven.
Howling Wolf Bakery, which is based in the town, is a new mobile bakery travelling to markets across Cumbria serving Romanian and English artisan breads, cakes, sweets and more.
Owner Benjamin Ardelean, 31, and his wife Carmina, 28, who are both Romanian, moved to the town last year from Birmingham after falling in love with the area.
Benjamin said: “I used to be a chef before and about a year ago we moved here from Birmingham because we loved the area and the Lake District, so I’ve spent this year renovating the house and helping my wife with her photography and leather work business.
“I’ve always liked to bake and make sweets and cakes and stuff like that but I’ve never got fully into it, but because this year I’ve had more time than usual I started baking more and I decided to start going to markets to give myself some exposure.”
Some of the bakes on offer include: coconut and chocolate sponge cake, amaretto cherry cake, berry pies, apple cake, cozonac, dessert salami, a variety of breads including focaccia, brownie cookies and cinnamon buns. One of the breads Benjamin makes takes 24 hours to rise before it can be finally baked.
He added: “What I am trying to do is bring something that people in the area haven’t tried before because most of the recipes come from my home country. I haven’t seen many bakeries in Whitehaven, so I’d like to help the town out a bit as well, I think there’s definitely a gap for a new bakery here.”
In the future, Benjamin hopes to set up a permanent store in Whitehaven but for now, can be found at various markets across the county.
So far, he has been to several markets, and will be attending this weekend’s Makers and Bakers market on King Street in Whitehaven on Saturday December 10 from 10am to 3pm.
