Finding Nemo: West Cumbrian youngsters set to bring underwater adventure to life

Youngsters from a West Cumbrian amateur dramatics society have visited a local aquarium to help them get into character.

The junior section of Maryport Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, Spotlight, will perform Finding Nemo Junior to the Carnegie Theatre in Workington from June 11 to June 14.

The 60-minute production is an adaptation of the popular 2003 Pixar film.

The entire cast visited the Lake District Coast Aquarium in Maryport to research their characters and help them understand fish movements to help them in rehearsal.

The eight to 17-year-olds began rehearsing in January and are doing so twice a week to bring a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship and adventure.

The cast are no strangers to the stage and last year their production of Moana Jnr was the District 10 Youth Winner for Best Staging of a Youth Production.

Penny Murphy, 11, is playing Nemo. The Dearham School pupil, who has been a member of Spotlight for almost two years, has previously appeared in Elf and Moana Jnr. She said her favourite song from Finding Nemo was Go With The Flow.

Netherhall School pupil Frankie Featherstone, 13, plays Dory in the show. A member of Spotlight for three years, she has appeared in Scrooge, Matilda, Elf, Moana Jr and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and her favourite song in Finding Nemo s Just Keep Swimming Part 2.

Penny & Nemo

Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home.

But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean.

With the help of characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

Frankie & Dory

The society, founded in 1913, currently has 29 members in its junior section – and a waiting list to join. It is hoped it will be able to expand.

The junior section was reformed in 2012 to produce Thoroughly Modern Millie and the society moved to the Carnegie in Workington in 2013.
