Northampton Town say they are hopeful that Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture at home to Carlisle United will get the go-ahead.
However the club adds that much depends on how low temperatures drop between now and the weekend.
Both clubs are keen to get back into action as their respective games – Northampton at Harrogate and Carlisle at home to Barrow – were both postponed last Saturday.
Freezing conditions across large swathes of the country saw both games getting the thumbs down after respective inspections.
The good news since then is that the Cobblers’ Sixfields home would have been playable last night if there had been a fixture scheduled.
Wintry conditions have continued into this week with snow and frost causing further problems but Sixfields has fared better than most and would also have been fit to stage a game if they had been at home last Saturday.
.Northampton say the club’s ground staff have worked hard this week to ensure the pitch remains in good condition for the weekend, however they are in the hands of the weather gods.
Temperatures in Northampton are forecast to drop to as low as -5 tomorrow night and to -3 on Friday, and that would cause problems.
Chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “The pitch is fine as we speak, the covers have been on here for a week or so and the pitch is playable at the moment.
“The covers are coming off for a few hours during the day to allow the pitch to breathe but the ground staff are the experts, they will get the covers back on in good time and they know what is best to do.
“The issue might be that if we get some of the overnight temperatures that are forecast later this week then any covers might struggle to cope with that but we will do all we can to get the game on.”
