Staff at Barrow’s BAE Systems have donated over £30,000 for 34 charities through the firm’s Give As You Earn scheme this year.

Representatives from the charities gathered at the Forum in Barrow earlier this month for a presentation.

Submarines operations director Oli Wignall said: “This event gave us the opportunity to connect with many charities and good causes and learn first-hand about the amazing work they do – something we were not able to do during the Covid period, a time when many charities really struggled.

“We are fully committed to supporting a wide range of charities and good causes through the Give As You Earn scheme and we’d like to thank each and every person who has donated to the scheme. We couldn’t make a difference without their support.”

The recipients were Furness Parkinson’s Support Group; Bay Hospitals Charity; Millom Recreation Centre Gymnastics Club; South Copeland Disability Group; North West Air Ambulance; CancerCare; St Mary’s Hospice; Vision Support Barrow and District; Barrow Women’s Community Matters; Self Harm Awareness For All; Retired Greyhounds South Lakes; Riding for the Disabled Association Furness Group; Animal Welfare Furness; Ulverston Inshore Rescue; Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue; Duddon Inshore Rescue; Barrow and District AgeUK; Families Matter; Barrow and District Disability Association; St Pius X Catholic Primary School; Emmanuel Christian Centre; Be Me Project; Headway; Dalton Community Association; MS Society Furness Group; Blackwell Sailing; Abbeyfield; Walney Community Trust; Furness Multicultural Community Forum; First Grange and Cartmel Scouts; Advantage! Barrow Raiders Community Foundation; Birchall Trust; Samaritans Barrow, Furness and South Lakes; and the Salvation Army.

To apply for BAE Systems Give As You Earn funding, charities need to complete and submit an application form via email, stating they are a local registered charity and providing their charity number.

Applicants also need to state the amount they are hoping to secure, as well as an outline of how the money will be used. The funding cannot be spent on wages or running costs so most successful applications are for specific projects or funding for equipment items.

For an application form, charities should contact rebekah.caine@baesystems.com The form should then be completed and returned with a covering letter that includes the registered charity number and contact details.

The window for applications opens next month and closes on September 30.
