Workington came from behind to register an impressive 3-1 win at Mossley to cut the gap on the two teams ahead of them in NPL West.
Leaders Macclesfield could only draw 1-1 at Clitheroe and Reds are now just a point behind second-placed Leek Town from the same number of games.
It was a deserved victory for Danny Grainger’s men after they had fallen behind to a 56th minute penalty after a foul by Dan Wordsworth and Mason Fawns made no mistake from the spot.
That had been against the run of play and certainly the shot count was very much in Workington’s favour.
Unfortunately for the Cumbrians all their best efforts from Conor Tinnion, Scott Allison and Dav Symington were straight at goalkeeper Matt Wonnacott.
Going behind did not change the balance of the game because Workington continued to have the better of things but frustratingly were either just off target or Wonnacott saved comfortable.
But it all changed on 76 minutes when record goal-scorer Allison tried his luck in a crowded area and saw his shot find the net for a priceless equaliser.
There only looked like one winner after that and a double from Dav Symington in the 85th and 92nd minutes wrapped up the points for Grainger’s men.
Both were typically well-struck efforts, although the second needed a deflection to take it beyond Wonnacott.
The win avenged the opening day defeat to Mossley at Borough Park while this Saturday Reds have a home date with Newcastle Town and will be looking to complete a League double to maintain their challenge.
