A fundraising challenge, launched on social media in 2020, is being taken on in Cumbria next month by two keen footballers.

Luke Boyle and Cameron Prokas will be attempting the David Goggins challenge in memory of Luke’s cousin, Jack Taylor.

Jack, 19, of Stainton, died in May 2021. He was a young player at Penrith Football Club and died in a one-vehicle crash while driving near Penrith.

The former pupil at Stainton School and Ullswater Community College, he had been studying professional policing at the University of Cumbria.

During the COVID-19 pandemic he volunteered at Cumbria police where he collected and delivered PPE equipment for frontline officers.

His cousin, Luke Boyle, manager of Kirkoswald FC,and his lifelong friend Cameron Prokas, of Penrith AFC and Wetheriggs United, are planning to run four miles every four hours for 48 hours to raise vital funds for the Great North Air Ambulance.

The challenge will begin at 6pm on Saturday February 11, finishing at Frenchfield Park on Monday February 13 at 6pm.

Billy Williams, chairman of Penrith AFC said: “We urge everyone if possible to support these two young men who wish to commemorate Jack’s life and raise funds for the Great North Air Ambulance.

“It’s a cause we all know depends on us all and saves many lives in the process.

“We would like to see as many supporters of this cause as possible here at Frenchfield Park on Monday February 13 at 6pm to welcome and celebrate Luke and Cameron’s fantastic effort and support the cause.”

The challenge was started by David Goggins, an American ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, motivational speaker, and author.

Born in New York, the 45-year-old was formerly in the US Navy and Air Force and served in the Iraq War and has written a self-help memoir called Can’t Hurt Me.

David first launched the 4x4x48 challenge in 2020 and it proved to be so successful that he’s brought it back each year since and has been adopted by thousands of followers on social media.
