Workington Comets reveal major team sponsor

Workington Comets have landed a major team sponsor for their return to speedway this season in the National Development League.

Local tyre fitting firm GT Tyres are the new backers for the Comets as they race again at the revamped Northside training track.

Comets promoter Andrew Bain said: “We are delighted GT Tyres are powering us in 2023. They are a family-run business that shares the same passion for the sport as we do. Our return for the upcoming season just wouldn’t be possible without them.

“We believe that their backing will be invaluable to the club to power us through the season for an exciting and highly anticipated return of the Comets.”

GT Tyres director Graeme Thompson said: “I’m pleased to be in a position to become the Comets main sponsor after being a supporter as a child in the 1970s when I was standing trackside and hoping to collect a tear-off!

“I then took my grifter bike down to Bankend Farm and listened to Steve Lawson tune the bikes. So it is a huge privilege for GT Tyres to become the main sponsor for the Comets.”

GT Tyres is a local business with over 30 years of experience in the tyre industry. They have a team of more than 30 members of staff and 14 support vehicles at branches based in Maryport and Carlisle. It sells over 60,000 tyres a year.

Comets have also announced their admission prices for the 2023 season – and they will be the cheapest track in the NDL with an adult ticket costing £13.

Bain said: “Around the country other NDL tracks are charging £14 or £15 but we wanted to keep it as low as possible because of the current cost of living problems that people are having to contend with.

“Children over five and up to 17 will only be charged a pound when accompanied by an adult. Children under five will be allowed in for free.”

A family ticket for two adults and up to a maximum of three children will be £25.

For a season ticket fans can see all the League matches and the Knockout Cup semi-final with holders Leicester for £90. It excludes play-off and possible Knockout Cup final meetings.
