There are a few weeks left to apply for one of more than 600 apprenticeship positions at BAE Systems’ Submarines’ site in Barrow.

With around 11,000 people already in its workforce, the company offers some of the very best careers in Cumbria, building submarines for the Royal Navy.

Across the UK, BAE Systems is set to hire more than 2,600 new apprentices and graduates in 2023 – the majority based in the North of England.

In Barrow, there are 126 graduate roles and 89 undergraduate roles on top of the 605 apprentice positions available. Applications for this year’s apprentice intake are open until February 28.

Post GCSE apprenticeships offer careers in roles such as Pipe Fabricator, Mechanical Machinist, Driller and Steelworker.

For those with A-levels or equivalent (Higher/Degree Apprenticeships), available roles include Project Management, Engineering and Supply Chain.

A world-class learning environment – the Submarines Academy for Skills and Knowledge – is right there on the Barrow site with all the facilities and expertise to help new starters progress to enhanced qualifications and rewarding careers.

Phil Athersmith, Head of Early Careers Delivery, said: “Early Careers starters are the future of our business; that’s why we invest in them so heavily.

“The learning environment and the opportunities offered are second to none. Our business has Royal Navy contracts stretching past the 2030s so we are always looking for the next generation of shipbuilders who want to live and work in beautiful South Cumbria.”

A key focus for the Submarines business is to ensure it attracts and recruits people from a range of diverse backgrounds.

Phil said: ” Our business prides itself on providing a modern workplace with diversity and inclusion embedded in everything we do. I’d certainly encourage people to look at the career opportunities on offer in Barrow helping to build submarines for our Royal Navy.”
