Flood defence work starts in Grange-over-Sands

Flood defence work has begun in Grange-over-Sands.

Properties in the Windermere Road and Lindale Road area of the town have been prone to flooding since the 1900s and most recently, floods are estimated to have happened once every 12 months for the last 30 years.

A pumping station will be built to take away the excess water that cannot be discharged through the existing culvert under the land where the Spar supermarket is.

The old culvert under the Spar will also be replaced prior to the construction of the new supermarket.

Cumbria County Council, which is leading the work, said the installation of the discharge pipes from the pumping station will cause some minor disruption on Lindale Road, which will be controlled by a traffic management system.

Windermere car park will be closed until around the end of July, and visitors will need to use on street parking.

A spokesman added: “The council realise on-street parking is not always ideal and apologises for any inconvenience this will cause.”

Work will be carried out Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and on the occasional Saturday from 8am to 1pm.

Contractor Cubby Construction Ltd will carry out the improvements.
