A 42-year-old Cumbrian man who groomed, sexually assaulted and raped a child has been jailed for 12 years.

Barrie Hoskin, of Main Road, Flimby, near Maryport was sentenced today at Carlisle Crown Court for the following offences:

  • Five counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity of a child
  • Two counts of cause / incite a child to engage in sexual activity
  • Rape of a child
  • Engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity of a child

Hoskin is also subject of an extended six-year licence and a lifetime sexual harm prevention order.

The offences came to light in January of last year when police received an initial report.

The investigating officer in this case was Detective Constable Nina Doyle. Following sentencing, she said: “During the investigation, Hoskin showed no remorse whatsoever for the crimes he committed. He exploited the young victim, buying numerous gifts and groomed them to gain his trust.

“Cumbria Constabulary is committed to thoroughly and compassionately investigating all reports of rape and serious sexual offences, no matter how much time has passed.

“Support is available in Cumbria for victims of sexual offences. The Constabulary works closely with trusted partner agencies to provide the appropriate support which is tailored to an individual’s circumstances.

“I would encourage anyone who has been victim to a sexual offence to contact police so that our officers can investigate. You will be supported throughout our investigation.”
