Work has gone on overnight to demolish a Maryport bakery gutted by fire.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the major Maryport blaze at The Bakehouse which happened in the early hours of Wednesday.

Senhouse Street remained closed while emergency services were on the scene. It remains shut while work continues to dismantle the mid-terrace property this morning.

It is hoped the road will reopen mid-morning if work continues to go to plan.

Workington-based Stobbarts Ltd were called in to help make the building safe for the investigation.

Its workers were on site overnight to make sure the property remained safe and the buildings either side were not at risk of further damage.

It is understood props had to be used to shore up the next-door buildings.

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service was called out at around 2.50am on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, the building was well alight and had spread to all four floors of the property, the fire service said.

It has been reported that fire spread to the roof of the next-door Maryport News, but that has not been confirmed.

Ten fire crews and several specialist vehicles were called from around Cumbria to help tackle the blaze.
