Over 60 Cumbrian schools see teachers strike

Over 60 Cumbrian schools have seen teachers go on strike for a second time over pay.

While talks are ongoing by education union the NEU and the Government, no agreement has been reached.

The union’s members voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action, with 90 per cent of teachers backing the walkout. They first took strike action on February 1 and the second strike is set to take place on Tuesday, February 28.

The union represents teaching staff, which also includes further education lecturers, support staff, teaching assistants and supply and agency teachers.

Its members also include staff working in education support services, alternative education provision settings, and early years.

The NEU is demanding a pay rise of 12 per cent, rather than the five per cent offered by the Government.

Strike action is planned for February 28 – it is up to the individual school to ‘take all reasonable steps’ to keep the school open.
