Pupils at a Cumbrian school have been celebrating the 80th birthday of their site manager.

Geoff Ellerton has been an integral part of Hunter Hall School for nearly 27 years, serving as site manager and general handyman.

Earlier this month, pupils and teachers celebrated his 80th birthday and all that he has done for the Penrith school.

A spokesman said: “Mr Ellerton’s contributions to the school community have been outstanding. From driving the school minibus, accompanying school trips to France, and being the chief maker of the annual school bonfire, each year ensuring that it burns bright and that students enjoy a magical evening of celebration.

“He has also overseen the courtyard Christmas tree, which has become a beloved tradition at the school. Geoff was the one who initially came up with the idea for the tree and has donated the lights every year since.

“Mr Ellerton’s dedication to the school is unmatched.”

In 2021, he celebrated his 25th year and in recognition of his service, he was presented with a sit-on mower to help him keep the cricket pitch in tip-top condition.

Prior to his time at Hunter Hall, Geoff was a milkman and worked in general farm work. Today, he is still working as the school’s site manager and as a director’s assistant at Richardson’s Funeral Services in Penrith.

Geoff’s wife, Ros, has also been a part of the school community, serving as a lunchtime supervisor and playing a significant role in keeping gardens tidy and planters filled. Together, Geoff and Ros have become well-known members of the local community, and their dogs – Scruff, Mac, and Odin – have also been beloved members.
