Whitehaven have been criticised for not attending yesterday’s clubs meeting in Huddersfield to vote on IMG’s proposed grading system for Rugby League.
Now the club has responded by issuing a statement explaining their non-attendance and why they would have abstained in any case.
The board said: “We decided not to attend for numerous reasons. Firstly, we as a board of directors, are fighting a daily battle to secure funds to support the club and allow it to continue.
“We felt our time and effort was better-placed in continuing to do so. Given we have a board comprising three people it was a decision we had to make as to where was the most appropriate place to give our time and effort to.
“On how we would have voted we feel that without understanding the guaranteed funding allowances against the grading criteria, we couldn’t make a judgement one way or the other, therefore we would have abstained.”
Of those clubs that voted, 86 per cent were in favour of introducing the new grading system – including Workington Town – but Barrow voted against.
