A man has appeared in court accused of attacking his mother with the intention of causing her serious harm.
Carlisle magistrates heard how police were contacted by hospital staff at the city’s Cumberland Infirmary on Sunday afternoon where the 61-year-old woman was being treated.
She is said to have suffered one broken rib, two suspected separate rib breaks, a punctured lung and been fitted with a chest drain having also undergone a CT scan.
Her son Paul Fearon, 41, appeared in the Carlisle court’s dock from custody this morning.
Fearon, previously of Sewell Lane, Carlisle, and currently of no fixed address, faces a charge which alleges that he wounded his mother with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm on April 23.
This has been brought following an incident at her home in Wigton, parts of which are said to have been witnessed by her husband.
Fearon spoke to confirm his name and date of birth during today’s short hearing, and was represented by defence lawyer Lauren Heasley.
No plea was entered to the wounding charge which, due to its alleged seriousness, can only be dealt with at a crown court.
A brief outline of the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and a summary of the woman’s injuries was provided by George Shelley for the prosecution.
After an application by Fearon’s solicitor in response, Fearon was granted conditional bail by magistrates who heard he had secured accommodation in Penrith close to his place of work
He is next due to appear in front of a judge at Carlisle Crown Court on May 23.
