A Carlisle man has been given a prison sentence of six years and one month for repeat drugs supply crimes and possession of a blade.
Police were alerted to a suspected exchange of drugs on Lund Crescent in the city’s Currock area at around 4.30pm on January 27 of last year.
A Ford Transit spotted in that area was located a short distance away in Manor Road, Upperby. This was registered and insured to 39-year-old Kevin Dodd.
Dodd was in possession of a mobile phone and £380 cash. Two blocks of what appeared to be drugs were found wrapped in cling film within a bag, with two more mobile phones and a black wooden-handled lock knife also recovered.
After Dodd was arrested and his address searched, a cannabis grinder and £3,000 cash was seized.
Carlisle Crown Court heard today that the 331g of heroin and 124g of cocaine had respective estimated street values of £17,500 and £10,000. The cocaine was particularly high purity at 77 per cent.
When brought to court, Dodd admitted possessing the two class A drugs with intent to supply, possession of criminal cash and illegally having a knife in a public place.
In 2015, he had been given a 77-month prison sentence for possessing heroin with intent to supply, and had since been recalled to prison on licence. He also had two other similar past convictions for offences committed in Cumbria dating back to 2010 and 2012.
Dodd’s barrister suggested he had not been a big fish within the criminal activity, and also that the mandatory seven-year prison term for repeat offending he faced was enough. He had sought to rid himself of drugs and had plans for legitimate work when released from custody.
Dodd, of Cant Crescent, Carlisle, told a probation officer he had been seeking to discharge debts he accrued through addiction, and that he had some operational function.
Passing sentence, Judge Nicholas Barker told Dodd: “You are no stooge. You knew what you were doing. You have been in this position before. You would have been aware of the risks that this entails.”
