Whitehaven rugby league club has responded to a series of rumours circulating in the area that it was in deep financial trouble.
The board has today issued a statement, backed by club captain Karl Dixon, which addresses those rumours.
The directors say: “Recently we have been made aware of many rumours regarding the club and our financial situation and we want to address this publicly.
“Due to less central funding, less footfall through the gates due to the current economic situation and higher bills it has been an increasingly difficult season off the field.
“The board of directors, although limited in numbers, has worked tirelessly to secure the club’s long term future.
“We can confirm the players have been paid up to date and in full to dispel any rumours in regards to this.
“We also have provided the HMRC with a joint business plan with our new sponsor which incorporates all legacy debt and we are positive moving forward this will sustain the club’s immediate and mid-term future.
“We have also secured a long term significant sponsorship deal with a leading UK company in their field and will provide information to the fans in the forthcoming weeks.
“We understand there is still a long way to go and we will continue to do our best moving forward and again we openly invite anyone who wants to volunteer or request to join the board of directors to message us directly.
“We also need our old and new fans to continue to support us by coming to matches and raising money where possible.”
Club captain Karl Dixon added: “Speaking on behalf of all the Haven players we want to put an end to the rumours that we are on strike and not playing at the Summer Bash next week.
“We are 100 per cent playing and hopefully get the win over Barrow. It’s a big few months coming up and we need all the support we can get to keep the club where it should be!
“Everyone at the club is working round the clock to make sure we survive the season and beyond! Hopefully us as a team can keep picking points up and end this season on a high.”
